Happy birthday to me!

And in typical me style, for my birthday I have a hangover. Wahoo! So, I'm really just reading what others have to say today. Not a lot of high-level thought going on in my head.

Over at, we are reminded that "Sex-positive does not mean misogyny-friendly!"

There's a lot there. Check it out. One thing struck me in the comments.

I for one am sex positive yet very very anti-porn.

I can’t imagine any porn ever being helpful to fighting against the patriachy.

Wha-huh? I don't get it. Does everything that exists have to be patriarchy-destroying? I mean, there are a lot of other things that creative expression accomplishes, many of which have nothing to do with partriarchy. Is that the standard? I can't see any point to it.

There's also talk about the whole problem with even calling it "sex-positive feminism," as though we're fighting against "sex-negative" feminists. "Anti-porn feminists" is closer, but still not exactly it. In Wikipedia they suggest that "individualist feminism" is the same as sex-positive. I'm not sure I agree. I think they're similar, or at least come from a similar philosophy.

Sigh. Here's my problem with the arguments I hear against porn. Aside from those who think it's actual violence, I gather that people think porn objectifies women and provides an unrealistic view of women and their sexuality. Hmm, that sounds familiar. Oh, it soulds like any form of popular media today. So here's the question. If that's what's wrong with porn, why are we trying to get rid of porn, but not Hollywood. Or the modeling industry? Well, I don't think we sohuld get rid of any of them, necessarily. There's one cause below all of this which shold be our target. Then we don't have to get rid of porn, or glossy magazines, we change the culture that let's them exist the way they do right now.

Update: After typing this I saw a Bitch Lab post on the same thing. Great bitches think alike.

Note to Bitch: Yeah, I don't know how my blog ended up being all about sex-positive feminism and abortion. It just happened. (Whew, I almost went a whole post without saying abortion. That was close.)
